Paul Sonnier Announcement to 18,000+ member Digital Health Group

Dear Digital Health group members,

In this update, I highlight a fascinating television interview with Evgeny Morozov, who cautions us against “technological solutionism”, great results of a medical digital health and telemonitoring study (which improved blood pressure control 27% vs. conventional methods), and continued momentum in digital health funding, which is up 12%.

EVGENY MOROZOV ON MSNBC – VIDEO
Evgeny Morozov, author of “To Save Everything, Click Here: The Folly of Technological Solutionism”, was interviewed on MSNBC’s “The Cycle” TV show, where he spoke about society’s overreliance on technology. Technology, Morozov proposes, can be a force for improvement—but only if we keep solutionism in check and learn to appreciate the imperfections of liberal democracy. Some of those imperfections are not accidental but by design.” http://bit.ly/EvgenyMSNBC

In this Quantified Self piece by Ernesto Ramirez, Sampo Karjalainen, Founder of the Moves activity-tracking app, makes a good counterpoint in talking about his consumer digital health application: “We’re seeing that when you make activity visible, people start to think about it. And when they think about it, they start to do small changes in their lives. They may park their car a bit further or consider biking instead of car. They may choose to walk just to get some steps and take a break from everyday hurries.” http://bit.ly/SampoDiscuss

DIGITAL HEALTH REVOLUTION IN BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL
A peer-reviewed medical study published in JAMA looked at the impact of an integrated digital health and telemonitoring solution, which resulted in 27 percent more patients controlling their BP. The 18-month “HyperLink” cluster randomized trial compared standard care with at-home BP measurements, digital data transfer, and telephone consultations with providers. More of the telemonitored group took their medications as directed, and expressed increased confidence in communicating with their healthcare providers and keeping their BP controlled. http://bit.ly/DigitalHealthBP

VENTURE INVESTORS CONTINUE LOVE AFFAIR WITH DIGITAL HEALTH STARTUPS – UP 12 PERCENT
While the latest Rock Health report excluded crowdfunding and deals under $2M, there were five deals in excess of $20M: Proteus Digital Health – $45M, HealthCatalyst – $41M, Watermark – $32M, NantHealth – $31M, and HealthTap – $24M. http://bit.ly/VCDigitalHealth13

INTERNET PIONEER AND COMPUTER VISIONARY WHO INVENTED THE MOUSE – NYT OBITUARY
Douglas C. Engelbart had an epiphany in 1950 that would change the world. In addition to the mouse, Engelbart’s other inventions became the basis for the Internet and the modern personal computer. http://bit.ly/EngelbartObit

CAN DIGITAL HEALTH HELP REDUCE YOUR RISK OF A PREMATURE DEATH?
“Prevention is better than cure,” said Desiderius Erasmus, the Dutch Renaissance humanist and scholar. Mary Meeker’s recent Internet Trends report highlights just this concept, and in the process emphasizes the value of digital health in aiding prevention.
