Announcement to 18,000+ member Digital Health Group – June 27, 2013

June 27, 2013

I sent the following announcement to 18,500 Digital Health group members on June 27, 2013:

Paul Sonnier Announcement to 18,000+ member Digital Health Group

Dear Digital Health group members,

When I look at digital health, I always consider the entire health continuum, which includes consumer fitness and wellness, not just healthcare. I’m often struck when people narrowly focus on clinical outcomes and healthcare delivery. As I’ve defined it, the ‘health’ in ‘digital health’ is writ large and positive outcomes (e.g. disease prevention) and cost savings are not confined to the healthcare system, albeit may straddle the two worlds.

WITHINGS LAUNCHES NEW ‘PULSE’ ACTIVITY TRACKER
It’s exciting to see this new device added to the Withings suite of integrated digital health solutions, of which I have one (the Smart Body Analyzer). Update: I just received the Pulse in the mail and am eager to try it out. My thanks to Philippe Schwartz, President at Withings!

Also, Cedric Hutchings, CEO at Withings, graciously responded to my request for a comment on the significance of their new device:
“Pulse adds a new dimension in personal health monitoring. Perfectly integrated with other Withings tracking device (the Smart Body Analyzer and Blood Pressure Monitor), you can now have a complete dashboard in your pocket, set and achieve small steps objectives towards a better health. We introduce unique features with the pulse such as automatic run detection, and HR measurement. The pulse also tracks your sleep quality when worn at night. We made a lot of effort to make the Pulse convenient to use and thus almost forgotten in your daily routine in the long term (touch screen, long battery life, charge with standard micro USB, wireless sync with the smartphone). It is the best coach for a sustainable behavior change.” http://bit.ly/WithingsPulseDH

DR. PETER ATTIA AT TEDMED: WHAT IF WE’RE WRONG ABOUT DIABETES? — VIDEO
Based on Peter’s and my own weight loss results achieved by drastically reducing consumption of refined grains, sugars, and starches (refined carbohydrates), I’d say that the conventional wisdom of nutrition science that Peter alluded to is, to his point, absolutely wrong. http://bit.ly/AttiaTEDMED
I wrote about Peter’s work in a prior group announcement/ http://bit.ly/NUSIorg

VENTURE CAPITALIST NAVIN CHADDHA ON THE CONSUMERIZATION OF DIGITAL HEALTH — VIDEO
Navin comments on the “consumerization of health care, in which technology is empowering patients to become consumers of their medical and health care.” http://bit.ly/NavinDH

ACTOR JAMES GANDOLFINI DEAD AT 51 FROM CARDIAC ARREST — VIDEO
In this video, Dr. Jon Lappok comments on the importance of being proactive in personal health tracking and lifestyle changes to reduce risk of premature death. http://bit.ly/GandolfiniDH

A MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION’S IMPACT ON HEALTH IS DIGITALLY-ENABLED SOCIAL NETWORKING…

HISTORICAL CONTEXT: SOCIAL NETWORKING IN THE 1600S — NY TIMES
“There is always an adjustment period when new technologies appear. During this transitional phase, which can take several years, technologies are often criticized for disrupting existing ways of doing things. As we grapple with the issues raised by new technologies, there is much we can learn from the past.” http://bit.ly/SocialNetworkingDH

DOCTORS EXPERIMENT WITH SOCIAL MEDIA AND APPS — CBC NEWS
“I think doctors are often dragged in kicking and screaming. We’re one of the last people to adopt these technologies. We still live and die by our phones and fax machines. How many professions can say that? It’s a bit embarrassing.” – Dr. Jeffrey Silver http://bit.ly/DocsSocialMedia
