Digital Health Gains Momentum—Paul Sonnier, Announcement to 14,000+ member Digital Health Group on LinkedIn
I sent the following announcement to 14,696 Digital Health Group members on Jan 22, 2013:
Dear Digital Health group members,
In this update:
(1) Wikipedia Entry for Digital Health
(2) Topol / Digital Health on National TV (US)
(3) Upcoming Events
As group members know, we are witnessing—and driving—the convergence of the digital revolution with health, aka digital health. “Health” is writ large in this context, and includes sports, fitness, and wellness, plus medicine and healthcare. I based this definition on Dr. Topol’s book, where he outlines the digital super-convergence elements thusly (annotations are mine):
(1) Wireless Sensors and Devices
(2) Genomics (A, C, G, T = digital, per J. Craig Venter)
(3) Social Networking
(4) Mobile Connectivity and Bandwidth
(6) Health Information Systems
(7) The Internet
(8) Computing Power and the Data Universe (Big & Cheap Data — This talk by John Wilbanks is excellent)
My thanks to Lauren Salisbury with Aegis Creative for creating the page. I also appreciate the efforts of Brandi March and Steven Sikes plus all of the group members who shared their thoughts on defining digital health. While the 80+ comments represent many of the ~1% of group members who regularly contribute to the group, even “lurking” (or simply reading these announcements) is important since we are all digital health message multipliers! By the way, the ratio of contributions in forums like this is fairly standard, as per the “90-9-1” rule.
(2) TOPOL / DIGITAL HEALTH ON NATIONAL TV (US)
Dr. Eric Topol will be appearing on NBC’s “Rock Center with Brian Williams” this Thursday at 10 pm PST. Dr. Topol mentioned that the segment will feature patients, digital health devices, and his book. This should be great!
(3) UPCOMING EVENTS
I will be attending the 4th Annual Burrill Digital Health Meeting, Feb 4-5 in San Francisco, CA. I’ve been the previous two years and highly recommend it for content and networking opportunities. Digital Health group members can receive a special discount by using the code “DHG” in the discount code box on the registration page. Startups can use code “startup”. Register
A featured speaker is Thomas Goetz, former Executive Editor of WIRED, TED talk speaker, and author of “The Decision Tree: Taking Control of Your Health in the New Era of Personalized Medicine,” which was chosen by the Wall Street Journal as a Best Health book of 2010.
Also, I’ll definitely be attending the 6th annual Future of Genomic Medicine conference, March 7-8 in La Jolla, CA. Dr. Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI), serves as course director. This conference provides a comprehensive sweep across the most salient opportunities in genomic medicine to change practice. The overarching goal is to spearhead efforts to use genomic knowledge to change medicine and make it far more precise and individualized. Register
